Student-athletes help save lives through collegiate partnership with American Red Cross<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two students and athletic stand-outs from the University of Saint Francis are among a cadre of student-athletes nationwide participating in a unique leadership program to develop professional skills beyond their competitive experience.<\/p>\n

Meghan Prible of the Cougar women’s basketball team and Kevin Dawson of the Cougar men’s basketball team were recently selected to participate in Champions of Character: American Red Cross\/NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Youth Leadership Program. Their participation involves networking and leadership opportunities within the Red Cross blood program.<\/p>\n

“We’re privileged to benefit from the valuable contributions these exceptional students can make,” says Sharyn Whitman, CEO of the Indiana-Ohio Region of the American Red Cross. “Their insights are truly remarkable and help strengthen our ability to meet the needs of the patients and communities we serve.”<\/p>\n

Activities for students involved in the American Red Cross\/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program include serving on boards and committees, working with professional mentors, and organizing and sponsoring campus and community blood drives. Students may also earn scholarships based on their achievements, and participate in leadership programs at the Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Meghan and Kevin are well-suited for the American Red Cross\/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program. Megan, a Keystone, Indiana native, is pursuing a nursing degree, which she has chosen out of her desire to help others. Kevin, a Fort Wayne native, is studying health and exercise science. He hopes to become a collegiate basketball coach and teach student athletes skills they can use both on the court and in life.<\/p>\n

“With the help of exceptional student-athletes like Meghan Prible and Kevin Dawson, we can build that next generation of blood donors, and help ensure that blood is available for patients in need,” says Whitman.<\/p>\n
