Female TV and radio personalities raise walls of Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity house<\/strong>
\nLowe’s provided $75,000 grant to build home with local family<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

(September 7, 2010) – Local female TV and radio personalities, Lowe’s volunteers and women from the community raised the walls of a new Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity house today as part of Habitat’s Women Build program. Volunteers and sponsors joined Habitat partner family, the Soes, to launch construction at the site of their new home in Fort Wayne.<\/p>\n

The Women Build program, underwritten by Lowe’s, recruits, educates and nurtures women to build and advocate for simple, decent and affordable houses in their communities.<\/p>\n

Fort Wayne Habitat received a $75,000 grant from Lowe’s to build the house.<\/p>\n

“We were so pleased to have our local celebrities and Lowe’s volunteers working side-by-side with our partner homeowner, the Soe family,” said Justin Berger, executive director, Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity. “This is one example of our affiliate’s commitment to revitalizing communities using homeownership as an anchor for hope and change.”<\/p>\n

Female radio and TV personalities supporting the build included: Alyssa Ivanson, WANE TV; Melissa Montana, Star 88.3 FM.<\/p>\n

Women volunteers will continue construction of the house through October. The Soe family house at 3808 East Sherwood Terrace will be one of the nearly 1,700 Habitat homes built since 1998 by all-women crews.<\/p>\n

“We are in the business of helping people build and maintain their homes,” said LaTasha Johnson, store manager, Lowe’s of W. Fort Wayne. “And through our partnership with Habitat and our employee volunteers, we are pleased to help support Habitat’s mission of making home ownership a reality for partner families.”<\/p>\n

About Fort Wayne Habitat for Humanity<\/strong>
\nFort Wayne Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)3 non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry that uses volunteer labor to build simple, affordable homes through partnerships with low-income Allen County families. Once completed the homes are sold to the family with a $500 down payment and at no profit on a 20-year, interest-free mortgage. Because of volunteer involvement, the cost of a standard three-bedroom home is kept affordable at approximately $65,000, with the monthly mortgage payment around $350, which includes taxes and insurance.
