Training and Specialized Care Leads to Early Diagnosis for Beloved Lioness, Ina<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fort Wayne, Indiana (September 29, 2026) \u2014 At 19 years old, Ina has far surpassed the average 15-year lifespan of her wild counterparts. Considered a geriatric lion, Ina has increased health care needs, and through years of voluntary training, in June 2025, the Zoo\u2019s Animal Health Team was able to diagnose Ina with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).<\/p>\n

CKD is a progressive condition that affects the kidneys\u2019 ability to filter toxins and conserve water.<\/p>\n

The kidneys have a certain number of nephrons, which are filtering units, and their job is secretion and filtration to eliminate toxins and conserve water. There are a finite number of nephrons, and once they are damaged, the disease will continue to progress further.<\/p>\n

“Ina’s chronic kidney disease has progressed over the past few months and is approaching end-stage disease. It is hard to say what her continued progression will look like, but right now she is clinically doing very well. Her training has been essential to her continued medical management and is a testament to her keeper-animal relationships.” States Dr. Caitlin Hemby, Staff Veterinarian at the Fort Wayne Zoo.<\/p>\n

Ina\u2019s current treatment plan includes monthly voluntary blood draws, blood pressure checks every other week, medications as needed, and weekly subcutaneous fluids.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlong with blood pressure checks, the next best thing for her kidney health, coupled with any medication provided by the Veterinary Staff, is giving the kidneys fluids,\u201d explains Jacquelynn Barnes, Animal Care Supervisor. \u201cThe African Carnivore Team has stepped in and added daily ice treats, added extra water along with a diluted goal milk mixture for more hydration, and all-day access to her indoor space for colder, fresh water.\u201d<\/p>\n

As this disease progresses, our team is focused on maintaining Ina\u2019s quality of life and ensuring she remains comfortable as her condition changes.<\/p>\n

\nThe Fort Wayne Zoo is northeast Indiana\u2019s largest tourist attraction, hosting more than 650,000 guests annually.
