First Steel Beams for Lutheran’s New Fifth Floor to be Hoisted Thursday Morning<\/strong><\/p>\n

(July 14, 2010) – Weather permitting, the first shipment of steel beams that will soon become the framework for Lutheran Hospital’s new 58,649-square foot fifth floor will be delivered and then hoisted to the roof beginning at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 15.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Lutheran announced plans in early May to expand the hospital upward to allow for the addition of 96 new private patient rooms and the continued renovation of existing units. These efforts will ultimately help the hospital transition to all private patient rooms.<\/p>\n

“The visible work being done on top of the hospital is only part of a series of projects that will provide greater comfort and convenience to our patients, guests and associates,” said Karen Springer, chief operating officer, Lutheran Hospital. “In the next few weeks, renovations to the medical surgical and oncology units on the second floor will begin. This phase is our next big step toward all private patient rooms.”<\/p>\nngg_shortcode_1_placeholder\n

Visible for miles around, the crane that does all the heavy lifting is anchored in one of the hospital’s interior stairwells and emerges from the roof. It extends nearly 200 feet above the ground and stretches horizontally 260 feet from its vertical base.<\/p>\n

The first shipment of steel will be approximately 30 tons. The total amount of steel needed for the new fifth floor at Lutheran is expected to be 700 tons. Almost all of it is being produced locally by Steel Dynamics Inc.<\/p>\n

The fifth floor project is targeted for completion in December 2011 at a cost of $42.3 million. The general contractor for the project is Weigand Construction. Design services are being handled by MSKTD & Associates Inc. At the height of construction, approximately 150 individuals will be working at the job site.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
