Please use the guidelines below to help you arrive at your destination safely as the winter weather arrives. Please also note that the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post will be keeping the shoulders and roads clear of abandoned vehicles on all interstates, state roads, and US highways starting the evening of Saturday, January 24, 2026. This is in effort to assist INDOT in their work to clean and prepare roads for the approaching winter storm. Abandoned vehicles on the shoulder not only cause issues for INDOT, but they run the risk of being hit by cars that slide off the roadways. If you must leave your vehicle on the side of the road and return to get it Saturday evening and it is gone, we have probably had it towed. You can contact the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post at (260)432-8661 for information on who towed it and where it was towed to.<\/p>\n<p>There is much that can be said and learned about winter driving. Below are a few common-sense tips and information gathered from our friends at the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Taking time to educate and prepare yourself now can save you time, money, and headaches once winter weather hits. In 2020, an estimated 25,000 injury crashes and 374 fatal crashes occurred in wintry conditions (NHTSA).<\/p>\n<p>This list is not an exhaustive or complete list of winter driving tips, but we here at ISP \u2013 Fort Wayne hope they will help you and your loved ones drive safely this winter. But remember, they only help if you read and apply them!\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nWhat can you do before the weather hits?\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tires<\/strong> &#8211; As outside temperatures drop, so does the tire\u2019s inflation pressure. Ensure your tires are correctly inflated to the recommended pressures. To find the recommended pressure for your vehicle, check the label on the driver\u2019s side door jam or in the owner\u2019s manual. Don\u2019t use the tire pressure listed on the tire\u2019s side, as this is generally the maximum pressure, not the recommended pressure. The tread should be at least 2\/32 inch or greater on all tires. Remember your spare!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Snow tires?<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; All-weather tires are great for everyday use, but tests have shown that snow tires can significantly increase your traction on snow and ice compared to all-season tires. All-wheel drive, traction control, and other computerized systems on your car are great for helping to maintain or regain traction, but they won\u2019t\u00a0increase your traction.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Battery<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0Your car\u2019s battery is also negatively affected by cold temperatures. Now is an excellent time to check your battery and charging system.<\/li>\n<p>\u00a0\t<\/p>\n<li><strong>Wipers<\/strong> &#8211;\u00a0Worn or damaged wipers are no match for snow and ice. Check and replace them if needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wiper Fluid<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; It is easy to empty your washer reservoir during heavy snow or on a slushy roadway. Make sure to top it off now with a\u00a0winter-grade\u00a0fluid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emergency Kit<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Crashes, breakdowns, and getting stuck on an unplowed road can happen even for the safest drivers. Don\u2019t be caught off-guard; have an emergency kit with a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, road flares, or emergency lights available. You may also want to pack a small shovel and some kitty litter or sand to help get \u201cunstuck.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you hit the road.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure you dress appropriately when headed out: coat, gloves, hat? That quick trip to the store could turn into an hour\u2019s wait for a wrecker or to dig yourself out.<\/li>\n<li>Clear your windows and lights of snow \/ ice and make sure you can see and BE SEEN.<\/li>\n<li>Leave early.<\/li>\n<li>Slow down.<\/li>\n<li>Increase your following distance. Instead of your normal 3-second distance, increase it to eight or ten seconds on slick roadways.<\/li>\n<li>Accelerate and brake slowly and smoothly.<\/li>\n<li>Turn off your cruise control.<\/li>\n<li>Buckle UP \/ Phone Down<\/li>\n<li>If you do not need to go out, stay home!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Be patient and courteous with others.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t crowd snowplows or drive beside the truck on two-lane roads. Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) employees work very hard to keep the roads moving; give them the space they need.<\/li>\n<li>Check on family and neighbors who may not be capable of driving in winter conditions.<\/li>\n<li>We\u2019re all in this together!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note that the Indiana State Police Fort Wayne Post does not give road condition updates. If you need to know information about the condition of the roadways, please contact INDOT or use INDOT Traffic Wise at <a href=\"https:\/\/511in.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">511IN.org<\/a>.
