The public is invited to observe the process daily as it is being created.<\/p>\n<p>Sand mandalas are a sacred Tibetan Buddhist art form\u2014intricately designed patterns made entirely of colored sand. Each mandala represents a symbolic map of the universe and is traditionally created as an act of compassion, healing, and mindfulness. The process requires extraordinary skill, patience, and precision, as the monks use fine metal funnels to gently layer millions of grains of sand into geometric patterns.<\/p>\n<p>The monks, who will be visiting from the Labrang Tashi Kyil Monastery, travel the world sharing Tibetan culture, art, and teachings. Their work promotes intercultural understanding while also supporting the preservation of monastic life and education.<\/p>\n<p>Once complete, the mandala will remain on display briefly before a closing ceremony in which it is ritually dissolved\u2014a symbolic reminder of the temporary nature of all things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis event is beautiful, educational, and profound,\u201d said Beth Boatright, ACPL Director of Community Partnerships and Programs. \u201cWatching the mandala take shape is mesmerizing\u2014but witnessing its dissolution is equally powerful. This event is an opportunity to learn about Tibetan culture and to be reminded that peace, compassion, and community are ongoing practices, not final destinations. The mandala offers an invitation to pause, reflect, and carry those values forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following times are free and open to the public at the Main Library:<br \/>\nOpening Ceremony: Dec. 8 at 9:30 a.m.<br \/>\nMandala Creation: Dec. 8 through 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (3 p.m. on Dec. 9)<br \/>\nClosing Ceremony: Dec. 13 at 10 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors are welcome to return throughout the week to witness the slow and transformative progress of the work.
