Lugnuts Win to Split Series<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lansing, Michigan (April 7, 2019) – Gabe Mosser tossed seven innings of one-run ball, but the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Fort Wayne TinCaps, 5-4, at Cooley Law School Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The two teams split the season-opening, four-game series.<\/p>\n

The game was a good, old-fashioned pitcher\u2019s duel through five innings, as Mosser and Lugnuts starter Sean Wymer matched each other with consecutive scoreless frames. Mosser, a Pennsylvania native, racked up five strikeouts through the first five innings, while Wymer, a native Texan, had four strikeouts through five.<\/p>\n

Fort Wayne (2-2) pushed across its first run in the sixth inning. Dwanya Williams-Sutton drew a one-out walk and took second base on a poor pickoff attempt to first base. Then, Justin Lopez lined a single into right field, scoring Williams-Sutton from second. It was the 18-year-old\u2019s first RBI of the season.<\/p>\n

Lansing (2-2) finally mustered a run in the bottom of the seventh, when Hagen Danner lifted a hanging curveball over the center-field wall for a two-out, game-tying home run. The Huntington Beach, California, native hit home runs in each of the last two games.<\/p>\n

Each team scored two runs in the eighth inning, but in different fashions. The TinCaps began the frame with an RBI single from Agustin Ruiz (scoring Tucupita Marcano), who later came around to score the inning\u2019s second run on a throwing error, while the Lugnuts tied the game again on a two-run home run by Otto Lopez that may have grazed the scoreboard over the left-center field wall.<\/p>\n

Fort Wayne scored a single run to briefly take the lead in the top half of the ninth inning. Luis Almanzar walked to start the frame and moved to second on a one-out groundout. He was then lifted for the pinch-running Jawuan Harris, and the former Rutgers football star came home to score on Marcano\u2019s RBI single into right field.<\/p>\n

Lansing completed their rally with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Alejandro Kirk singled to start the frame and was immediately lifted for a pinch-runner (Reggie Pruitt). Then, the Lugnuts perfectly executed a hit-and-run, putting Ryan Gold on first base with a single and Pruitt at third. An intentional walk, a wild pitch, a hit-by-pitch, another international walk, and another hit-by-pitch produced the two runs that gave Lansing the victory.<\/p>\n
