TinCaps Keep Battling<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fort Wayne, Indiana (August 2, 2022) – In a span of less than 27 hours, the TinCaps lost four of their best players to trades. Then on a very pleasant Tuesday evening at Parkview Field, in front of a crowd of 5,509 fans, Fort Wayne also fell in its series-opener with the South Bend Cubs, 5-4.<\/p>\n

Despite a short-handed roster, the ‘Caps (14-17, 41-56) battled back from a 5-1 deficit to put tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth inning. However, their comeback bid fell short.<\/p>\n

Center fielder Joshua Mears, now MLB.com’s No. 5 San Diego Padres prospect, pulled a two-run homer to left field in the eighth inning to pull the Summit City squad within a run. It was his 11th homer with the team in 38 games, and his first at home.<\/p>\n

The Cubs (21-10, 55-42), though, got out to a 3-0 lead through two innings. Fort Wayne’s first run came in the third on an RBI double by designated hitter Adam Kerner. Trailing 5-1 in the seventh, TinCaps right fielder Agust\u00edn Ruiz scored on wild pitch from third base.<\/p>\n

Earlier, on Major League Baseball’s trade deadline day, the ‘Caps saw their top-ranked Padres prospect, center fielder Robert Hassell III, traded to the Nationals as part of the package for All-Star Juan Soto. Then, less than two hours ahead of first pitch, outfielder Corey Rosier and middle infielder\/outfielder Max Ferguson were traded to the Red Sox. These moves came after the team’s ace, Robert Gasser, was sent to the Brewers on Monday in a deal that included All-Star closer Josh Hader.<\/p>\n

Gasser was scheduled to start Tuesday. In his place, Jose Espada struck out six over four innings. Lefty Gabe Morales fanned five in three frames and Luis Madrazo K-ed five in two scoreless.<\/p>\n
