Gasser Goes 6 Scoreless in Win at West Michigan<\/strong><\/p>\n

Comstock Park, Michigan (July 2, 2022) – With the formula of strong pitching, defense, and timely hitting, the Fort Wayne TinCaps beat the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers affiliate), 4-2, on Saturday night at LMCU Ballpark.<\/p>\n

On a beautiful evening with the first pitch temperature at 82 degrees, a crowd of 5,325 fans was treated to an excellent starting pitching matchup. West Michigan (5-3, 36-38) sent out No. 5 Tigers prospect Ty Madden against Fort Wayne’s Robert Gasser, the No. 7 Padres prospect. Coincidentally, it was a rematch from when the two faced each other last year in college at Texas and Houston, respectively. Madden’s nine scoreless innings in March 2021 bested Gasser’s seven scoreless as the Longhorns triumphed, 1-0.<\/p>\n

Similar to their college days, both starters were dynamic Saturday. But this time, it was Gasser who pitched deeper into the game. The left-hander threw six scoreless innings with five strikeouts, limiting the Whitecaps to four singles, three walks, and a hit by pitch. He helped his own cause by picking one of those runners off. The 23-year-old threw 92 pitches, of which 61 were strikes.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Madden was out after only four innings, having thrown 78 pitches (42 strikes). The TinCaps (2-6, 29-45) drew four walks against Madden — his most in a start this year. They also had two hits off the righty, who hit a batter as well.<\/p>\n

Fort Wayne broke though against reliever Gio Arriera with two outs in the top of the fifth. Left fielder Corey Rosier ripped a two-run single, while shortstop Jarryd Dale knocked the next pitch into center field for another run to make it 3-0.<\/p>\n

Though the Whitecaps scored a run in the seventh, the TinCaps built the lead back up to three in the top of the ninth as third baseman Lucas Dunn delivered a two-out RBI single.<\/p>\n

Defensively, Fort Wayne didn’t commit an error and turned a double play in both the eighth and the ninth innings.<\/p>\n

West Michigan scored a run in the ninth, but Ethan Routzahn eventually earned his first save in Minor League Baseball.<\/p>\n

Of note, Rosier, who also walked, extended his on-base streak to 16 games. Center fielder Robert Hassell III had a single and drew two walks, as he continues to pace the Midwest League in batting average (.307).<\/p>\n

After snapping a three-game skid, the TinCaps can earn a split of the six-game series on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
