‘Caps Comeback Falls Short at Lansing<\/strong>

Lansing, Michigan (June 18, 2022) \u2013 The Fort Wayne TinCaps lost, 6-5, to the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland Athletics affiliate) on Saturday night \u2013 Star Wars Night \u2013 at Jackson Field. The TinCaps gained and then lost the lead in the ninth inning.<\/p>\n

The TinCaps (25-37) came close to a monumental comeback, usurping a 4-0 lead from Lansing (24-38) in the ninth with five runs. Fort Wayne led off the ninth with a single from Brandon Valenzuela, the third time the catcher reached base in the game. Wyatt Hoffman grounded a base hit to right field, and Olivier Basabe lined a ball to center to load the bases with one out and bring the tying run to the plate. After a TinCaps strikeout, Agust\u00edn Ruiz struck out on a pitch in the dirt and scampered to first, with Valenzuela scoring, to keep the game alive and make it 4-1. Corey Rosier was up next and came back from down 0-2 to earn an RBI walk and push the score to 4-2 Lansing. Then, Robert Hassell III snuck a fly ball just past the diving glove of Lugnuts left fielder Jonny Butler for a three-run double, putting Fort Wayne ahead for the first time. Hassell moved his team-leading RBI total to 37, and the TinCaps looked to be on the way to their largest comeback win of the year.<\/p>\n

Lansing put a stop to that though with three hits in the bottom ofninth. Gabriel Maciel led off with a bunt base hit up the first-base line, Tyler Soderstrom tripled to deep right field to tie it, and Lawrence Butler singled to left field to walk it off.<\/p>\n

TinCaps reliever Luis Madrazo made his season debut in the fourth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Fort Wayne holds its own Star Wars Night at Parkview Field on August 19.<\/p>\n
