TinCaps Win Nightcap of Doubleheader<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fort Wayne, Indiana (May 26, 2022) – The Fort Wayne TinCaps split a doubleheader against the Quad Cities River Bandits (Kansas City Royals affiliate) on Thursday night at Parkview Field. After the River Bandits claimed the opening game, 6-2, the TinCaps returned the favor in the nightcap with a 6-2 win of their own.<\/p>\n

Thursday’s doubleheader was necessitated after Wednesday night’s game was suspended by rain in the bottom of the third inning. The front-half was a regulation nine-inning game. The back-half was only scheduled for seven innings.<\/p>\n

Despite the setback in the first game, Fort Wayne (16-26) pitchers struck out a season-high 19 batters. Starter Noel Vela K-ed five in three innings last night. In the resumption, relievers Edwuin Bencomo and Danny Denz each struck out seven in three innings, respectively. However, catcher Adam Kerner’s second-inning home run last night accounted for his team’s only runs.<\/p>\n

The TinCaps flipped the script in the second game. First baseman Jack Stronach hit an RBI ground-rule double in the home second inning. That brought in third baseman Olivier Basabe, who reached base on an error. Later in the frame, with two outs, second baseman Ripken Reyes added a two-run single that made it 3-0.<\/p>\n

Though Quad Cities (16-26) trimmed its deficit with a solo home run by first baseman Felix Familia in the top of the third, Fort Wayne responded with two more in the bottom half. Basabe singled in center fielder Corey Rosier, who had walked and stolen second base. Basabe himself stole second and then third, as an errant throw went toward the left-field bullpen, allowing him to score.<\/p>\n

The Bandits scored their second run in the fourth. Ahead 5-2 in the fifth, the ‘Caps tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with Rosier singling, stealing second, moving to third on a groundout by right fielder Matthew Acosta, and then crossing home on a passed ball.<\/p>\n

No. 21 Padres pitching prospect Efra\u00edn Contreras, in his fourth start back from Tommy John surgery, went a season-long four innings with a season-high seven strikeouts. Nick Thwaits, out of Fort Recovery High School in nearby Ohio, tossed two scoreless innings in relief, while Luke Boyd registered three strikeouts to end the game in the seventh.<\/p>\n
