Fort Wayne, Indiana (August 1, 2024) \u2013 For the 21st time this season, the TinCaps suffered a one-run loss, as they fell to the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers affiliate), 5-4, on Thursday night at Parkview Field in front of 6,618 fans. Out of Minor League Baseball’s 120 clubs, Fort Wayne has had the second most one-run setbacks.<\/p>\n

Fort Wayne (11-22, 39-60) got on the board in the second inning with an electric RBI double to the right-field corner by Nerwilian Cede\u00f1o. In the next at-bat, Cede\u00f1o scored on a wild pitch to give the TinCaps an early 2-0 lead.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until the sixth inning when West Michigan (18-14, 49-49) scored, as a double off the bat of Thayron Liranzo (No. 5 Tigers prospect) sent Indiana native Max Clark (No. 1 Tigers prospect) home from third. From there, the Whitecaps continued to tack on in the sixth with a wild pitch allowing Roberto Campos (No. 27 Tigers prospect) to score. In the same at-bat, Luke Gold drove in the final run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to put the visitors ahead, 3-2.<\/p>\n

TinCaps right-hander Braden Nett (No. 10 Padres prospect) put together the longest start of his pro career. The 22-year old threw a career-long 5 2\/3 innings and matched his highest number of pitches at 87. He struck out five.<\/p>\n

Fort Wayne tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh with a powerful shot from Griffin Doersching, a 401-foot home run over the left-field wall to tie the game at 3-3.<\/p>\n

But the Whitecaps wasted no time to respond in the eighth as a two-run homer courtesy of Max Anderson (No. 16 Tigers prospect) gave them the lead back, 5-3.<\/p>\n

Still, Fort Wayne went down swinging with a ninth-inning Joshua Mears home run to bring the deficit down to 5-4. However, it wasn\u2019t enough as West Michigan hung on to win. Mears finished with a game-high three hits, his first three-hit game since 2022.<\/p>\n
