Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 30, 2024) \u2013 On Marvel’s Defenders of the Diamond Night, the TinCaps attempted a super-comeback, but fell short. The 13th sellout crowd of the season at Parkview Field, 7,316 fans, packed the seats on Tuesday for a showdown between the TinCaps and the West Michigan Whitecaps (Tigers affiliate). It was back and forth early, but the Whitecaps\u2014propelled behind a five-run stretch in the fourth and fifth innings\u2014hung on to take down Fort Wayne, 6-4.<\/p>\n

West Michigan (16-14, 47-49) got off to a quick start, as a lead-off double by Indiana native Max Clark (No. 1 Tigers prospect) and an RBI-double courtesy of Kevin McGonigle (No. 4 Tigers prospect) gave the Whitecaps a 1-0, first-inning lead.<\/p>\n

Right away, though, Fort Wayne (11-20, 39-58) equalized. A run-scoring double off the bat of Romeo Sanabria tied the game up at 1-1 in the first.<\/p>\n

The TinCaps took their first lead of the night in the bottom of the third with another two-out RBI-double, this time from Nick Vogt to give them a 2-1 lead.<\/p>\n

Like Fort Wayne did in the first inning, West Michigan had an answer in the next frame. Luke Gold smacked a fly ball deep to center field for an RBI-triple to tie the game, 2-2. Then, a sacrifice fly by Danny Serretti with runners on second and third sent one home to push the Whitecaps ahead, 3-2.<\/p>\n

In the fifth, West Michigan tacked onto its lead with a Max Anderson (No. 15 Tigers prospect) single to send Clark home. The next batter, Eddys Leonard (No. 20 Tigers prospect), sent a 3-0 pitch over the left-field wall for a two-run homer, extending the Whitecaps\u2019 lead to 6-2.<\/p>\n

Down but not out, Joshua Mears brought the Fort Wayne bats back to life in the eighth inning with a towering 415-foot solo homer off The Harrison building. Two batters later, Kai Murphy took his turn in the box and unleashed another TinCaps home run to cut the deficit to 6-4\u2014where it stayed until the end. Murphy finished with a game-high three hits.<\/p>\n
