Low Rivers, Dry Ground and Decades of Infrastructure Improvements Prevented Major Flooding<\/strong>
\nSandbagging Materials Available at Johnny Appleseed Park<\/em><\/p>\n

Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 6, 2022) \u2013 Due to the large amount of rainfall that occurred Tuesday and today, some localized intersections within the City of Fort Wayne temporarily experienced flash flooding. In most cases the water quickly receded and no roads have been closed due to flooding. The City\u2019s rivers and streams were very low at the onset of the rain, and the ground was dry, so most of the water was absorbed into the ground.<\/p>\n

The river levels have risen somewhat, but aren\u2019t at a level of concern based upon rainfall predictions. If the rivers do reach a level that warrants concern, flood patrols will be activated to monitor known flooding locations.<\/p>\n

In order to assist residents who may have some localized flooding near their home, the City has provided sandbagging materials at Johnny Appleseed Park. Residents concerned with water entering their homes may help themselves to the sand and bags provided. Please bring a shovel to use to fill bags.<\/p>\n

Due to decades of infrastructure planning and improvements, fewer and fewer areas around the city are prone to major flooding problems as they were in the past.<\/p>\n

The City of Fort Wayne reminds citizens to be aware of the danger of flooded roadways and \u201cTurn Around, Don\u2019t Drown.\u201d Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other severe weather-related hazard. The Centers for Disease Control report that over half of all flood-related drownings occur when a vehicle is driven into hazardous flood water. The next highest percentage of flood-related deaths is due to walking into or near flood waters because people often underestimate the force and power of water.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
