Hot Diggity (Veggie) Dog! Local Eatery Wins PETA National Award for \u2018Coney Dogs\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fort Wayne, Indiana (July 5, 2021) \u2014 In time for the Fourth of July, PETA has scoured the country for the Top 10 Vegan Dogs\u2014and local restaurant Savery Vegan Grill has won a spot on the list for its Coney Dogs: two grilled veggie dogs bursting with flavor, smothered in house chili and cheese sauce and topped with diced onions.<\/p>\n

\u201cSavery Grill\u2019s Coney Dogs offer a double dose of deliciousness with a hearty helping of kindness to animals,\u201d says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. \u201cAll of PETA\u2019s award wieners make it easy to declare our independence from meat this Fourth of July.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the World Health Organization, processed meats, including hot dogs, cause cancer. Each person who goes vegan reduces their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, and diabetes; dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint; and helps prevent future epidemics and pandemics. Swine flu, bird flu, and COVID-19 all stemmed from confining and killing animals for food.<\/p>\n

As for animals in the meat industry, workers chop pigs\u2019 tails off, cut off their teeth with pliers, and castrate the males\u2014all without any pain relief\u2014and confine cows to cramped, filthy feedlots without protection from the elements. At the slaughterhouse, workers hang the animals upside down, often while they\u2019re still conscious, and bleed them to death.<\/p>\n

Other winners on PETA\u2019s list include the Nacho Hot Dog at The Vegetable Hunter in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; the Califas Dawg at Cali Dawg in San Jose, California; the Elote Dog at Cycle Dogs in Seattle; and the Buffalo Crunchy Dog at Sealevel City Vegan Diner in Wilmington, North Carolina. Each eatery will receive a framed certificate<\/a> from PETA, which also offers a list of the best ready-to-heat vegan hot dogs<\/a> available at grocery stores on its website. <\/p>\n
