\nAmerican Heart Association joins Parkview Field in getting Fort Wayne residents moving<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The American Heart Association has been working with local businesses and individuals to identify Start! Walking Paths in communities across the country. This week, Parkview Field was designated an official Start! Walking Path by the American Heart Association. It is the first path in Indiana to be designated by the association.<\/p>\n

Parkview Field offers Fort Wayne residents and downtown workers an easy option for adding walking to their day. The concourse is open year round to walkers every day from 7 a.m. to dusk. There is no admission cost. Restrooms are also available. Beginning Memorial Day through Labor Day, Parkview Field will also offer a lunch cart with healthy options at minimal prices. One lap around the concourse is one-third of a mile.<\/p>\n

The Parkview Field walking path will be used on April 7 for the National Start! Walking Day community walk which will take place at 11:30 a.m. Jay Gilbert, President & CEO of PHP, and Chad Carpenter, COO of the Parkview Heart Institute, will kick off the walk, along with representatives of the American Heart Association.<\/p>\n

At the completion of the walk, participants will receive a Start! goodie bag.<\/p>\n

Start! Walking paths offer a great opportunity for Fort Wayne residents to use when it’s time for a walk. You can search the American Heart Association’s website at www.startwalkingnow.org to find Start! Walking Paths in your area. Parkview Field is one of hundreds of Start! “PHP is honored to be a part of such an energizing and much needed initiative like Start!,” said Jay Gilbert, President & CEO of PHP. “It’s exciting to see our community work together to make positive strides to improve the health of our residents.”<\/p>\n

In January 2010, the American Heart Association defined the seven key factors to ideal cardiovascular health. Physical activity is one of those factors, but only 15 percent of American adults achieve the association’s recommended levels of moderate aerobic exercise (150 or more minutes per week). The Start! initiative encourages all Americans to get started on a regular walking program as a way to achieve their physical activity goals and to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease by as much as 30 percent.<\/p>\n

“We want to make healthy lifestyle choices a top priority in the communities we serve,” said Sue Ehinger, chief operating officer, Parkview Hospital. “Educating the public is an important part of the Start! initiative. We encourage people to find an exercise routine, such as walking 30 minutes a day. It can make a positive difference in improving cardiovascular health.”<\/p>\n
