The Brookview Neighborhood Assocation in Fort Wayne, Indiana, invites you to attend THE BALLAD OF BROOKVIEW: THE HISTORY OF THE BROOKVIEW-IRVINGTON PARK NEIGHBORHOODS. This is an ARCH program for the entire community – and it’s free.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

ARCH is giving one of their lively talks: this one about the history of Fort Wayne’s Brookview-Irvington Park Neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

Informal and fun, you’ll come away with lots of good “Hey, did you know \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6?” to muse over and share about these pretty old neighborhoods we call home!<\/p>\n

Did you know \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 that Brookview’s designer, Arthur Shurcliff, is best known for his work at Colonial Williamsburg? \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 that circus animals were paraded along Westbrook Drive from the train tracks to the famous circus grounds where Centlivre is now? \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 the Brookview Park along Spy Run Creek once housed a lively outdoor Centlivre beer garden \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 that Centlivre Apartments were luxurious when they were built?<\/p>\n

Who built the beautiful stone walls along Spy Run Creek? Who designed Irvington Park? Why are there so many trees? Why does any of this matter?<\/p>\n

From the era of City Beautiful, we’ll consider the quiet, curving, tree-lined streets and sidewalks of the Shurcliff style.<\/p>\n

The Brookview Neighborhood and area of town has a rich, interesting history. ARCH will give us highlights from their research into neighborhood design and history. The Brookview Neighborhood was designed in 1917 by the Master Landscape Architect Arthur Shurcliff (also spelled Shurtleff) for the Wildwood Builders Co. Irvington Park, just north of Brookview, has a different origin. How do they connect?<\/p>\n

The Brookview-Irvington Park Neighborhood Historic District listing on the National Register of Historic Places is progressing!<\/p>\n

The local historic preservation organization, ARCH, was awarded by the City the project of drafting the nomination paperwork.<\/p>\n
