FWPD: Fatal Pedestrian/Vehicle Accident, Pontiac and Abbott Street

On August 13, 2024, the FWPD responded to the report of a pedestrian-involved accident at the intersection of Abbott and East Pontiac Streets just before 8 pm this evening.

Details/Summary:

The Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a pedestrian struck at Abbott St. and E. Pontiac St. just before 8pm this evening. A male juvenile was crossing Pontiac Southbound when a vehicle traveling Westbound on Pontiac struck him. According to witness accounts, the child darted in front of the vehicle causing the accident. The adult male driver of the vehicle is cooperating with the investigation and there were no apparent signs of impairment. Speed, also does not appear to be a factor. All information is preliminary and subject to change during the course of the investigation.

After being struck the child was rendered aid, then transported by TRAA to a local hospital in life-threatening condition. While at the hospital, the child was pronounced deceased by medical staff. FWPD chaplains made the scene of the accident and hospital to console the family and community.

This incident remains under investigation by the FWPD Fatal Accident Crash Team, the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Coroner’s Office.
