Today, Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry toured Miss Virginia’s Food Pantry to highlight the importance of volunteers during National Volunteer Month.
Mayor Tom Henry visits Miss Virginia’s Food Pantry for Volunteer Month
Fort Wayne, Indiana (April 12, 2021) – On Tuesday, April 20, 2021, Mayor Tom Henry toured Miss Virginia’s Food Pantry at 1312 South Hanna Street to highlight the important roles volunteers play. The month of April marks National Volunteer Month, an opportunity to show appreciation to the scores of volunteers who support non-profit, civic, faith-based and community organizations.
Pantry Director for Miss Virginia’s, Greg Witte shares “Miss Virginia Food Pantry operates on Tuesday and Wednesday of each week. We distributed over 105,000 lbs. of food, served over 29,740 guests and 105,204 households during 2020. Our volunteers are the backbone of Miss Virginia Food Pantry and we salute them for all they have done. Enough cannot be said about this group of Volunteers.”
The Volunteer Center has contributed 53,278 volunteer hours equaling $1,449,161 over the past 12 months. Throughout the pandemic, dedicated volunteers have assisted with food distribution, virtual tutoring, made face masks, and supported wheelchair clients at the Dept. of Health Vaccination Clinic and to nonprofit organizations in the community.
Volunteer Center Executive Director Ani Etter states “In a year that was full of challenges for so many, volunteers stepped up and found new ways to help their neighbors. Volunteer Center serves our community by connecting nonprofits to a pool of dependable volunteers, and providing the tools and resources to best support and engage volunteers.”
Volunteer Center is a non-profit agency that has been a part of the Fort Wayne Community since 2004. From special events to long term commitments, volunteers are able to share their unique skills and abilities, filling meaningful community roles. The Volunteer Center Signature Programs address critical needs affecting low to moderate income individuals by providing children’s winter coats, legal assistance and tax preparation to the most vulnerable in our area.
