Details:

While engaged in OWI patrol an officer running radar observed a vehicle going at an excessive rate of speed. He attempted to stop the vehicle but the vehicle failed to stop. He lost sight of the vehicle quickly and began termination of the pursuit around Progress Road due to the excessive speed. The pursuit was less than 30 seconds. Calls began coming in about the accident less than one minute later of the pursuit termination.

Officers came up onto Washington Center Road as the calls were coming in. They advised the vehicle the officer had been chasing had crashed into another vehicle. A female was found pinned inside a vehicle on Washington Center Road and the male driver of the pursuit vehicle was taken into custody. That victim was taken from the scene to a local hospital. The doctor there said she had life-threatening injuries.

The FACT Team was paged out due to the severity of the injury and they will begin the process of gathering measurements and evidence to determine the cause of the crash. At this time Lima and Washington Center Roads are restricted and Washington Center westbound is closed at Lima. It will remain so until the duration of the investigation, about two hours. Police do believe alcohol and excessive speed to be a factor in this incident.
