Fort Wayne Philharmonic Presents Carmina Burana
(February 21, 2020) – The Fort Wayne Philharmonic, under the direction of Music Director Andrew Constantine, will present Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana at the Embassy Theatre on Saturday, March 14 starting at 7:30 p.m. With roughly 250 musicians including the Philharmonic, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Chorus, Fort Wayne Children’s Choir, the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus and soloists Toni Marie Palmertree, Patrick Muehleise and Christian Bowers, this will be the largest assemblage this season.
“This concert is going to take the roof off,” said Constantine.
Carmina Burana is a narrative piece of music based on 24 medieval poems from a manuscript of the same name discovered in the early 19th century. The text celebrates the nature of life, the joys of Spring and the delights and perils of gluttony, gambling, drinking and lust. It is by far the composer’s most famous work and remains one of the most popular pieces of 20th century classical repertoire.
“It is a mixture of Latin, middle-German, peculiar French, lots of hidden meanings but some of the most exciting music we ever hear in the concert hall,” said Constantine.
The first half of the program begins with Mussorgsky’s famous tone poem Night on Bald Mountain.
“Everyone has heard Night on Bald Mountain in so many different contexts; on T.V. commercials, in Disney’s Fantasia, in other cartoons, in movies and now people have the opportunity to listen to it in the concert hall,” said Constantine.
Rounding out the first half of the concert, award-winning pianist Ilya Yakushev will perform Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major. Shostakovich, known for intensely serious compositions, wrote the optimistic concerto as a gift to his son, Maxim, who premiered the work at his graduation from the Moscow Conservatory.
