Officer Involved Shooting

Suspect: Deceased, Adult White Male

Details:

On 10/8/16 at approximately 8:50 PM Officers with the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a call for service regarding an armed individual with a knife. Initial dispatch information stated that “someone was in the parking lot with a knife”, “the Suspect was threatening to cut someone in the parking lot” and “the Suspect was intoxicated”.

Officers arrived on scene and made contact with the suspect behind the Hallmark Inn in the parking lot. The suspect was armed with a knife and refused to comply with repeated commands from Officers to drop the knife. Officers continued to order the suspect to drop the knife, but to no avail. The suspect then closed the distance between himself and Officers, lunging at officers prompting the Police to use lethal force to neutralize the deadly threat.

After being shot the suspect fell to the ground, with knife in hand, still refusing to comply with commands to drop the knife. Once the suspect was on the ground Officers approached and kicked the knife free from the suspect’s hand. Officers then rendered the suspect first aid in an attempt to save his life. Officers continued to perform first aid until medics arrived and took over life saving procedures. Medics pronounced the suspect deceased after life saving procedures failed.

The Officers identity, and the suspects identity will be released at a later date when appropriate to do so. The Officer will be placed on paid administrative leave per department policy. The Indiana State Police will conduct a parallel investigation.

Crime scene, the Detective Bureau, and the Shooting team made the scene. All evidence is being collected and anyone with knowledge about the incident is being interviewed.

This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutors Office, Indiana State Police, and the Corners Office.
