Game recap from the TinCaps:

TinCaps Come Back to Sweep Whitecaps

(July 30, 2016) – The TinCaps overcame a four-run deficit in an 8-7 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) on Friday night, into Saturday morning, at Parkview Field. With the victory, Fort Wayne swept the three-game series.

The TinCaps (13-21, 49-55) broke a 7-7 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning as designated hitter Austin Allen drew a two-out bases loaded walk. Fort Wayne had no one on with two outs against Adenson Verastegui (L, 0-4) before the number nine hitter, center fielder Tyler Moore, drew a walk. Second baseman Nick Vilter then singled prior to a walk drawn by shortstop Ruddy Giron.

The Whitecaps (14-17, 53-45) led 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning. But that’s when the TinCaps started to rally — also with two outs. Right fielder Jhonatan Peña and Moore singled with two outs to bring up Vilter, who on the ninth pitch of his at-bat hit his first home run of the season over the fence in left field to make a one-run game, 7-6.

Fort Wayne then tied it, 7-7, in the seventh on an RBI single from first baseman Brad Zunica, who was up after singles from Allen and third baseman Carlos Belen.

The scoring initially started in the first inning as Allen had an RBI single to score second baseman Peter Van Gansen, who was hit by a pitch. (Van Gansen was replaced by Vilter in the second.)

However, after Allen’s hit, the tarp came out, and stayed out as a result of rain for 1 hour and 52 minutes. The game itself — not including the delay — went 3 hours and 28 minutes, meaning it didn’t wrap up until almost 12:30 a.m.

Following the rain delay, catcher Marcus Greene Jr. gave the TinCaps a 2-0 lead with an RBI double. A Vilter RBI double in the second made it 3-1, before the visitors reeled off six unanswered.

Left-hander Elvin Liriano (W, 1-0) was the fourth and final pitcher for Fort Wayne, as he worked the final three innings and stranded a runner at third in both the eighth and ninth. West Michigan went 1-for-17 with runners in scoring position.

The four hurlers did not walk a batter all night. Meanwhile, the TinCaps had 13 hits, coming from nine different contributors.
