Game recap from the TinCaps:

TinCaps Outlast Whitecaps in 13
Fort Wayne 4, West Michigan 3 (13 Innings)

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. (July 11, 2016) – The TinCaps outlasted the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers), 4-3, in a 13-inning marathon on a hot Monday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark. The game, which was scheduled to start at noon, was delayed 2 hours and 4 minutes by rain and then lasted 4 hours and 2 minutes.

First baseman Brad Zunica broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 13th with a solo home run pulled over the right-field fence against Yordy Cabrera (L, 1-1). For Zunica, it was his team-leading 10th home run of the season. For the TinCaps (8-11, 44-45), it was their third solo homer of the game.

Nearly four hours before his long ball, Zunica gave Fort Wayne a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an RBI groundout. The lead carried into the fifth inning before the Whitecaps (8-9, 47-37) scored their lone run against TinCaps starter Jacob Nix.

Catcher Austin Allen put Fort Wayne in front 2-1 in the sixth with a solo shot to right-center field that actually broke a window in the ballpark’s stadium club. Left fielder Jose Carlos Ureña extended the lead to 3-1 with a homer of his own in the seventh.

West Michigan, however, rallied with two outs in the seventh to level the game, 3-3.

The score stayed that way until the 13th as both sides squandered scoring chance after scoring chance. The TinCaps went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine on base, while the Whitecaps were 5-for-16 in those spots, but stranded 15. The home team had the bases full with no outs in the 10th, but righty reliever Nick Monroe (W, 3-2) pitched his way out of the traffic. Then it was Fort Wayne that wasted a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the 12th.

Monroe worked a scoreless 10th, 11th, and 12th, before handing it off to Lou Distasio (S, 2) for the 13th.
This was the longest game of the season for the TinCaps by both innings and time. The victory gave Fort Wayne a split of the four-game series before a day off on Tuesday.
