News release from the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana:

Community invited to Buddy Up For Life on first Saturday in June

(May 26, 2015) – The American Red Cross invites you to Buddy Up For Life at a special blood drive at Parkview Field on Saturday June 4, along with buddies the Fort Wayne TinCaps, WANE-TV and WBCL 90.3 FM.

Those who come to give blood at this event will receive a free ticket to a future TinCaps game, the chance to win the opportunity to throw the first pitch at a TinCaps game and other great gifts from the event partners, while supplies last.

The Buddy Up For Life blood drive comes at a critical time for the Red Cross, when blood donations often decline during the busy summer months. “The need for blood doesn’t take a summer break, as people often do,” said Alexandra Cole, recruitment manager for the Red Cross. “That’s why summer blood donations are critically important.”

With high schools and colleges in recess and many donors taking time off for vacation, the summer months can be among the most challenging times of the year for the Red Cross to collect enough blood. However, the need for blood remains constant.

“What better way to celebrate friendship than to encourage a buddy to donate blood with you. Together you can help save lives,” said WANE-TV/ NewsChannel 15 anchor Heather Herron.

Every blood donation has the potential help save up to three lives. “Imagine the number of lives we could touch if everyone brought a buddy to give blood with them,” said Michael Limmer, Vice President of Marketing and Promotions for the TinCaps.

The Red Cross supports patients being treated at 80 hospitals across Indiana. Blood and platelet donations are needed every day for patients with many serious medical conditions. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood.

Three ways to schedule your appointment to donate: visit redcross.org and enter sponsor code “tincaps,” call 1-800-RED CROSS, or download the Red Cross Blood Donor App. The app allows you to schedule appointments, track your donation after you give, and earn donor rewards.

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcross.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states including Indiana), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site.
