United Way invests more than $4.68 million in Allen County
(May 19, 2016) – Today, United Way of Allen County announced $4.68 million being invested in Allen County over the next year. More than $2.75 million will be invested in 37 local nonprofits and another $1.93 million will go to community collaborations. Of the 37 local nonprofits receiving funds, seven are new to United Way: Blue Jackets, Caring About People (designations only), Cornerstone Youth Center, Crime Victim Care, East Wayne Street Center, Erin’s House for Grieving Children and Wellspring Interfaith Social Services.
“We are thrilled with the caliber of the programs and community collaborations that United Way can both play a role in and invest in,” said David Nicole, president and CEO of United Way of Allen County. “Allen County is fortunate to have so much human service expertise in the area and people who truly care about changing the lives of those around them.”
United Way received requests from local nonprofits for nearly $3.82 million for the 2016-2019 funding cycle. All applications must address issues that fall under Basic Needs, Education, Financial Stability and Healthy Lives and achieve specific outcomes under those areas. Investment recommendations for funded partners were made by a team of 35 community volunteers, many of which are from social service backgrounds. Volunteers spent hundreds of hours reviewing funding requests. Their suggestions then went on to the Investment Cabinet, which then sent the information on to United Way’s Board of Directors. The Board then reviewed the recommendations for the funded partners and the community collaborations and voted to approve them. More than 65 volunteers were a part of the process.
“Volunteers are the backbone of United Way,” said United Way Board Chair, Dent Johnson. “Our volunteers represent the best interests of community, local nonprofits and our Allen County neighbors. Their job is a hard one, especially when there is never enough money to meet the true needs of our community.”
