TinCaps righty Elliot Ashbeck dominates in relief
By Mike Monaco

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (April 22, 2016) — After the TinCaps bullpen quieted the South Bend Cubs for much of the evening, the Cubs pushed across a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to walk off past Fort Wayne, 7-6, on Friday at Four Winds Field.

Cubs first baseman Matt Rose bounced a slow roller up the third-base line in the 10th to score center fielder Donnie Dewees from third base. South Bend (9-6) has snatched the first two legs in the four-game set with the TinCaps (9-7).

TinCaps right-hander Elliot Ashbeck starred in relief, tossing four shutout innings of one-hit ball. The former Bradley University standout fanned all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings.

The TinCaps struck first when catcher Austin Allen laced an RBI single to right field to plate center fielder Michael Gettys in the top of the first.

South Bend countered with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, 1-1, in the fourth. But, the TinCaps exploded for five runs in the fifth on six hits, as all nine starters came to the plate. After Gettys stroked an RBI single, designated hitter Ty France lifted a three-run home run to deep right-center field. Three batters later, right fielder Luis Tejada smoked an RBI double into the left-center gap to make it 6-1.

The Cubs, though, came right back with five runs of their own in the home fifth. The game stayed scoreless until the 10th.

Gettys (3-for-5, 2B), Allen (2-for-4) and left fielder Rod Boykin (2-for-4) posted multi-hit nights.

Cubs right-hander James Norwood (W, 1-0) stranded a pair of TinCaps on the bases in the 10th, while Fort Wayne lefty Jerry Keel (L, 0-2) allowed one hit in the 10th.
