IPFW Announces 2016 Student Worker of the Year Awards
(April 15, 2016) — Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) has 701 student workers on campus, as well as 105 graduate assistants. They work anywhere from a few hours a week to several hours every day. Their tasks can be anything from answering phones to working on the grounds to teaching classes.
To recognize the invaluable work these students do, each year to celebrate National Student Employment Week IPFW’s Career Services and Financial Aid Offices asks for nominations for Student Employee of the Year. Twenty students were nominated this year based on the areas of team work and collaboration, commitment, excellence in attitude, initiative and creativity, and problem solving. A committee of four IPFW professionals reviewed the nominations and selected two winners, one graduate and one undergraduate student.
Outstanding Undergraduate Student Worker
Grayson Ostermeyer is the undergraduate recipient. He has worked for the last three years as a member of the IPFW Peer Educator Team and was recognized for his initiative and drive. He is the leader of the peer educator program and currently supervises five other peer educators. He is a top student worker because of the many programs and presentations that he created and delivered like the High Five + 1: Habits For Success, Nutrition and You, Positive Bystander, Under Pressure, and Perfect Your Party Skills or providing programs like Suicide Prevention Week resource fair, IPFW Health Fair, and the Easy Eats Everyday monthly cooking series.Outstanding Graduate Student Worker
Lynne Koepper is the graduate recipient. She works for the Office of Career Services as a Graduate Intern for employer relations. Koepper has taken great initiative in enhancing the First Destination Survey for the university by committing to the goal of a 65% response rate from students while also meeting with deans and chairs of academic departments to inform them about the survey process. A task like this takes many hours on the phone and persistence in reaching alumni who have recently graduated.Each recipient was given a plaque and a cash award to be used for schooling.
Outstanding Student Supervisor
The Outstanding Student Supervisor of the Year Award, for all on-campus supervisors who oversee student workers, was given to Carol Sternberger, associate vice chancellor for academic programs and graduate studies. Sternberger was nominated by her graduate assistants, Carly Thompson and Julie Stilles.
