News release from the Three Rivers Festival:
Three Rivers Festival Releases 48 Float Ideas for 48th Parade honoring Indiana’s Bicentennial
The Lutheran Health Network Three Rivers Festival Parade has been approved for the Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project(April 6, 2016) – In October 2015, the 2016 Lutheran Health Network Three Rivers Festival Parade theme was announced in a presentation to Indiana’s First Lady, Mrs. Karen Pence, the official Indiana Bicentennial Ambassador. “This year’s theme, Indiana Bicentennial. Celebrate History – Ignite the Future honors Indiana’s rich history and promising future. The Three Rivers Festival Board of Directors, staff, and our title sponsor, Hanning & Bean wanted to encourage parade participants to show tribute to Indiana – through celebrating the many inventions, projects, and celebrated Hoosiers that have enriched our community”, stated Jack Hammer, Executive Director.
Each year in July, more than 50,000 people line the streets of downtown Fort Wayne the first Saturday of Festival to witness creative floats, spectacular balloons and hear the sounds of our youth marching bands. This year, the Parade will take place on Saturday, July 9th at 10:00 am. Thanks to the generosity of Sweetwater Sound, stipends will again be offered to marching bands and first-time float builders to help offset the cost of creating bigger and more engaging floats.
“One of the most common requests I get each year is to come up with float ideas for parade participants,” commented Hammer. “This year, our staff has diligently researched to come up with 48 inspiring facts derived from Indiana’s history to get them started.” Here is a sample of that list:
- 5. Hoosier Basketball: Basketball is a not only a sport, but a tradition in Indiana.
- 6. Jackson 5: this Motown legend rose from humble circumstances in Gary, IN
- 13. Garfield: America’s beloved lasagna-eating cat comic is based in Muncie, IN.
