Autism Awareness Month Celebrated at IPFW
(March 31, 2016) — Autism Awareness Month will be celebrated at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) with a special event on Tuesday, April 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in IPFW Alumni Plaza.* A variety of interactive sensory activities will take place and resources about autism will be shared. This event is free and open to the public.
“Autism is a developmental disability that affects a person’s communication and social skills, and according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the current rate of autism is 1 in 68 births,” said Jane Leatherman, associate professor in the Department of Professional Studies and director of the Special Education program at IPFW. “It is critical to raise awareness of Autism Spectrum Disorders and provide information to students, parents, and our community.”
The Autism Awareness Event is sponsored by the Special Education Program, Counselor Education Program, members of Chi Eta Sigma, Bridges Program, and Educators for Excellence 2.0.
