Domestic Dispute / Barricaded Suspect / Death Investigation

Date: March 3, 2016

Time: 5:40 p.m.

Location: 900 block of High Street

Details:

On Thursday, 3/3/2016, at approximately 5:40 PM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the 900 block of High Street reference a domestic dispute. Initial reports indicate a husband and wife were arguing. During the argument, the husband displayed a loaded handgun and pointed it at his wife. The wife fled the residence and called the police. The wife reported the male suspect was alone inside the residence after she fled. Responding officers arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the suspect inside. The suspect refused to respond or exit the residence.

At approximately 6:17 PM, the Emergency Services Team (EST) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) were called to assist reference a barricaded suspect that was armed with a handgun. EST members attempted to verbally order the suspect out of the residence via a loud speaker. In an attempt to motivate the suspect to exit the residence peacefully, EST members deployed a flash bang and a chemical agent (tear gas) into the residence. When the suspect failed to respond, CRT members deployed a robot equipped with a camera into the residence. At approximately 9:44 PM, the robot located a male subject lying on the first floor of the residence. The subject was unresponsive and appeared to be bleeding. EST members made entry into the residence and made contact with the subject. The subject appeared to have a single gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased by medics on scene. Crime Scene Technicians are currently processing the scene and collecting evidence.

Nearby neighbors were evacuated from their homes for their safety during this four hour investigation. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the Allen County Coroner’s Office. The Allen County Coroner’s Office will release the subject’s identity along with the cause and manner of death. There are no additional details at this time.
