9th Edition of IPFW Professor’s Popular Textbook Released
(February 4, 2016) — Terri Jo Swim, associate dean and professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), has published the 9th edition of her best-selling early childhood textbook Infants and Toddlers: Caregiving and Responsive Curriculum (Cengage).
A well-established reference, Infants and Toddlers is nationally one of the most utilized and recognized textbooks in education classrooms. The book presents a child-centered approach for the childcare provider called “conscious caregiving.” This important and well-rounded approach encourages a sense of empowerment and focuses on the respectful, purposeful, and careful handling of children in any early childhood program.
“Our youngest citizens have the right to the highest possible care and education,” said Swim. “It is an honor to know that my textbook assists students with understanding their roles and responsibilities as a professional infant-toddler educator.”
Reader-friendly, realistic, and easily applicable to real life, the book emphasizes the child’s growth and development, helping readers discover how they can best and most effectively influence that development.
This edition features integration of National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) teaching standards as well as videos that bring concepts to life by showing actual teaching situations. In addition, new coverage of brain research and neuroscience, highlighted by a brain icon throughout the text, helps connect current research to development.
Swim has taught in higher education institutions for nearly 20 years and has worked in private childcare centers, university-based laboratory infant/toddler and preschool programs, and summer camps with children ages birth to 13 years. She was also the co-editor of The Hope for Audicity: Recapturing Optimism and Civility in Education (Hampton Press). Her current research interests include infant-toddler and preschool curriculum, documentation, and assessment in teacher education.
