Shooting Investigation

Details:
On January 30th, 2016 at approximately 1:52pm an Officer with the Fort Wayne Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the area of Lewis Street. and Hanna Street. During the course of the traffic stop the passenger of the stopped vehicle fled the scene on foot. The Officer pursued the suspect on foot East bound on Lewis St. The suspect then began to open fire on the Police Officer in the area of Lewis St. and Francis St. where multiple shell casings were located. The Officer returned fire and continued to pursue the suspect North bound through the alley that parallels Lewis to the North.
The suspect was apprehended in the alley North of Lewis St. and Harmar St. The Officer and the suspect were both uninjured in the exchange of gun fire. The driver of the suspect vehicle fled the scene during the foot pursuit and gun fire exchange. Lewis St. was closed from Hanna St. East to Harmar St. Francis St. and Harmar St were both closed from Lewis St. North to Madison St. while the crime scene was being processed.
The driver of the suspect vehicle later called into dispatch advising that she was in a vehicle with the suspect who opened fire on the Police Officer. she advised that she left the scene out of panic and fear. She was concerned that she would be implicated in the crime and called Police to explain why she fled. Officers were in the process of making contact with the suspect driver to gather more information about the incident.
The shooting team and the Detective Bureau made the scene. There were witnesses who observed the incident and they were being interviewed by Detectives. The Officer involved in the incident is required to give a public safety statement at the scene and then will have a 72 hour de-escalation period before writing his detailed report of the incident.
This incident remains under investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutors Office.
