Gera Haus Student Restaurant Holds Food Drive for Community Harvest
Only Two Serving Nights Left(November 30, 2015) — Gera Haus, the pop-up restaurant run by hospitality and tourism management (HTM) students at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW), will wrap up its one-semester run Tuesday, December 8.
On its closing night, the students will conduct a children’s food drive in support of the Community Harvest Food Bank. All patrons who donate a non-perishable food item will receive a free toy.
Gera Haus has been open every Tuesday evening from 5 to 10 p.m. since September 29 in the Holiday Inn at IPFW, located on the corner of Coliseum Boulevard and Paul Shafer Drive. Operating the restaurant is part of the Advanced Food Service Management course, a capstone graduation requirement for HTM students. The course gives students practical experience with every aspect of restaurant operation.
The students this semester chose the name Gera Haus to celebrate the sister-city relationship between Fort Wayne and Gera, Germany, a city of about 115,000 people 150 miles south of Berlin. Last semester students ran the popular Plock Tavern, which featured Polish cuisine to honor Plock, Poland, another of Fort Wayne’s sister-cities.
