IPFW Remembers the Past, Looks to the Future with Time Capsule Ceremony on Monday, November 16
(November 13, 2015) — Students, faculty and staff at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will memorialize the school’s 50th Celebration by closing and burying a time capsule at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 16, in Rhinehart Music Center.
The public is welcome to attend.
“Although my colleagues on this project, Art Friedel and Jim Owen, and I are among the least likely to be present for IPFW’s 100th celebration in 2064 when the 50th Celebration time capsule will be opened, we worked with six of IPFW’s Chapman Scholars who may be present for those festivities,” said Linda Balthaser, assistant dean emerita of the School of Arts and Sciences and project coordinator in charge of the time capsule.
The project’s goal was to collect items and documents that would be both interesting and informative to the people present in 2064, when the capsule will be opened. To ensure that the materials survive for the next 50 years, documents were printed on 100% cotton paper and enclosed in acid-free archival sleeves.
Items in the capsule include the current IPFW Statistical Profile (a document prepared annually to serve as a comprehensive resource about institutional facts and student characteristics), a 2014-2015 Student Handbook, House Enrolled Act No. 1001 identifying IPFW as a multisystem metropolitan university effective July 1, 2015, a volleyball signed by Coach Arnie Ball and Olympian Gold Medalist and IPFW Setter and Alumnus Lloy Ball, among many others.
“We overachieved a bit,” Balthaser said. “We intended to enclose 50 items, but the number ended up exceeding 100.”
The capsule will also include letters written by the four original Chapman Scholars, Amy Schwarz, Jessica Geyer, Matt Rybicki, and Jeff Valliere.
