Red Cross to educate residents on fire safety, install smoke detectors in New Haven on Oct. 24
NEW HAVEN, IN (October 22, 2015) — Staff and volunteers from the American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana and members of the New Haven Fire Department will canvas New Haven neighborhoods this Saturday, October 24, 2015 to share lifesaving information about fire safety and to inspect and install smoke detectors where needed.
WHO: The American Red Cross and the New Haven Fire Department
WHAT: The American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana will canvas neighborhoods in New Haven talking to individuals and families about fire safety and installing free smoke detectors and new batteries.
WHEN: Saturday, October 24, 2015 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
WHERE: The canvassing event will launch from the New Haven Fire Department, 910 Hartzell Road in New Haven.
WHY: Home fires are the greatest disaster threat to American families. Seven people die every day from home fires and a fire-related injury is reported every 40 minutes. Due to these horrific statistics, the American Red Cross in Indiana plans to install 5,000 smoke alarms over the next 12 months.
Since its launch last October, the American Red Cross and its partners have saved 15 lives and installed more than 100,000 smoke alarms in homes across the country. The campaign is a multi-year effort to reduce the number of home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent.
The American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana serves an 11 county area that includes Adams, Allen, DeKalb, Huntington, LaGrange, Noble, Miami, Steuben, Wabash, Wells and Whitley Counties in Indiana.
