New IPFW Center of Excellence presents “Big Data and Business Analytics” Conference

(October 9, 2015) — Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) will host its first “Big Data and Business Analytics” conference October 15 from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Walb Student Union Classic Ballroom. This is the inaugural event from the new Center of Excellence in Business Analytics in the Doermer School of Business.
Conference registration is $15 for individuals or $120 for a table of eight. Attendees can register online through Greater Fort Wayne Inc.

Every business has “big data”

Businesses of every kind generate tremendous stores of data, but organizations face challenges turning that data into actionable knowledge.

Conference attendees will hear from faculty members and graduate students in the Doermer School’s MBA program, along with guest experts at the SAS Institute, a leader in predictive analytics software.

Sessions will look at various techniques to harness growing volumes of data and examine what businesses can accomplish with that data to enhance service, learn more about customers, improve market position, and ultimately increase profits.

Center of Excellence in Business Analytics Opens

The conference also serves as the formal introduction of the new Center of Excellence in Business Analytics (CEBA). As the consulting arm of the Doermer School of Business, the center’s ultimate goal is to maximize profits of local businesses through solving business problems, and enhancing performance, while connecting the community with faculty experts and giving students hands-on, real world experience.

Cigdem (pronounced CHEE-dum) Gurgur, MBA program director and associate professor of management and decision technologies, serves as the center’s director. Born in Turkey, Gurgur received a Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from Rutgers University, an M.S. in management sciences and operation research from Warwick Business School in England, and an M.S. in applied and mathematical sciences from Rutgers University. She has been a member of the IPFW faculty since 2009.

“Doermer School of Business is excited to initiate this new center of excellence specializing in business analytics with Dr. Gurgur as the director,” said Michael Eikenberry, dean of the Doermer School of Business. “She has significant experience in this particular field and will be an asset to the northeast Indiana community that we serve.”
