3’s a charm: USF QB Nick Ferrer earns MSFA weekly award 3rd time
(October 6, 2015) – University of Saint Francis quarterback Nick Ferrer has himself a three-peat for the Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Offensive Player of the Week after the sophomore led the then 11th-ranked Cougars to a 45-42 win at then sixth-ranked Marian University on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Ferrer (Westfield, IN / Westfield H.S.) threw three touchdown passes including the game-winner and finished with 348 yards passing. Ferrer was 24-for-46 passing (2 INTs) in just his seventh career start. He led USF back from 21-0, 28-7 and 42-25 deficits to the upset win to become the second USF QB to win the award three times in the same season joining David Yoder, who did it three times in 2013.
Ferrer has passed for more yards in USF’s first five games than any other USF QB with 1,699 yards. With 348 yards at No. 6 Marian, Ferrer passed the previous high of 1,464 set by Jeremy Hibbeln in 2000. Ferrer has passed for 20 TDs, also a new high (Hibbeln, 15 TDs through 5 games in 2000).
USF players have earned 92 conference player-of-the-week awards, all under the direction of head coach Kevin Donley, in 18 seasons. This is the 27th time a USF QB has earned the award. USF CB Spencer Cowherd was named MSFA MEL Defensive Player of the Week on Monday and NAIA Defensive Player of the Week.
The No. 9-ranked Cougars play host to Siena Heights University on Sat., Oct. 10 at noon at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium / Kevin Donley Field.
