News release from the Fort Wayne Curling Club:

“End of Summerspiel” Curling bonspiel this weekend

(September 25, 2015) – WINTER IS COMING. The new official end of summer is upon us, as the Fort Wayne Curling Club kicks off its annual “End of Summerspiel” Curling bonspiel (a.k.a. tournament). This annual late September event launches the curling season and is a successor to the hugely successful Fort Wayne Summerspiel that ran from 2010-2013 and featured the appearance of multiple Olympic curlers from the U.S., Scotland and China.

The Fort Wayne End of Summerspiel runs from Friday, September 25 at 10:00 am through Sunday, September 27th at 4:00 pm. The finals are scheduled at 2:00 pm on Sunday and will be preceded by a short traditional curling ceremony in which the competitors in the finals will be piped onto the ice by a bagpiper.

This year’s event features 20 teams (4 players from teams) and includes players from: Fort Wayne, Dallas, Chicago, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Nashville, South Bend, Philadelphia, Detroit, Bowling Green, Kalamazoo, Midland (MI), and Ontario, Canada.

The event will be held at the Fort Wayne Curling Club located at 3674 N. Wells Street just south of Fernhill in the Wells Street Commerce Center. This facility, dedicated solely to the sport of curling, is the only dedicated curling facility in the state of Indiana or for 150 miles in any direction. It features 3 sheets of curling, warm room viewing, and a lot of other amenities.

The Fort Wayne Curling Club was founded in 2010 and has been one of the most dynamic curling clubs in the entire United States. Since its founding in only 2010, the club has accomplished great things, including:

  • Hosting the largest summer curling tournament in the United States each year from 2010-2013, as high as 60 teams in one year
  • Hosting the inaugural United States Curling Association Arena National Curling Championships
  • Hosting a wide variety of world championship and Olympic curlers including the full Olympic teams from U.S. (2006, 2010, 2014), Scotland (2014) and China (2014)
  • Building our own curling facility dedicated to the sport of curling (in just our 4th year of existence), the only one in the state of Indiana and for 150 miles in any direction. The closest dedicated curling facilities are in Detroit, Chicago and Columbus (cities multiple times our size)
  • Being selected to host the 2nd annual United States Curling Association’s Member’s Assembly (the annual conference held by the National Governing Body of the sport of Curling) to be held October 15-17, 2015.
  • Actively working to assist other clubs make the move to their own dedicated facility

Spectators are welcome to come and watch the event. There is no charge for admittance.
