Fatal Vehicle Crash, 4400 block of South Lafayette Street

On Sunday, 09/06/2015, at approximately 2:24 AM, a City of Fort Wayne Police sergeant was on routine patrol driving northbound in the 3300 block of South Lafayette Street. 3300 South Lafayette Street is a one-way northbound traffic only street. The sergeant observed a vehicle driving directly towards him the wrong way southbound on South Lafayette Street. The sergeant activated the emergency lights on his fully marked squad car and the vehicle stopped before crashing into the squad car. The sergeant exited his squad car and attempted to make contact with the driver of the vehicle. As the sergeant exited his squad car, the driver of the vehicle quickly backed up and fled the scene driving westbound on Dalman Avenue. The sergeant returned to his squad car and attempted to catch the fleeing vehicle. Due to the driver’s high speed and disregarding traffic lights, the sergeant lost sight of the vehicle.
Several officers arrived in the area and began searching for the vehicle. At approximately 2:26 AM, officers located the vehicle crashed in the 4400 block of South Lafayette Street. The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. The Fort Wayne Fire Department arrived and extricated the driver from the vehicle. Medics pronounced the driver deceased at the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate the vehicle was traveling southbound on South Lafayette Street at a high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle and left the west side of the roadway in the 4400 block of South Lafayette Street. After leaving the roadway, the vehicle struck a city light pole and a tree.
Crash Investigators are currently collecting evidence and processing the crash scene. Investigators reported high speed was a contributing factor in the crash. It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors. South Lafayette Street is currently closed to all traffic between Mckinnie Avenue and Congress Avenue. The roadway will remain closed until the investigation is complete and the city light pole is repaired.
This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Coroner’s Office, and the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. The Allen County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the driver along with the cause and manner of death. There are no additional details regarding this investigation at this time.
