USF Bike to Build to Benefit Haitian Orphans
(August 20, 2015) — University of Saint Francis students and faculty are partnering with No Limit Cycling for an event to benefit orphans in Haiti. The second annual Formula for Life Bike to Build will take place on September 5 at 10 a.m. on the USF campus, 2701 Spring Street. Proceeds from the event will be donated to assist in the construction of an orphanage for Haitian children who have lost their parents to disease or natural disasters.
The event will include a 17-mile family route, a 35-mile endurance route and a 100k challenge route. Cyclists must register at bikereg.com and registration is $25. Check-in will take place at 9 a.m. at the USF Hutzell Athletic Center. Helmets are required on all participating cyclists. An all-ages post-finish lunch will be provided by Didier Meats outside Deer Park Irish Pub.
Formula for Life was created by USF graduate Cortney Shepard after a mission trip to the Dominican Republic in 2007 where she encountered newborns and infants in dire need of nutrition. Deeply moved by the experience, she began raising funds to send infant formula to Haiti, where conditions for children were even worse. Her work gained momentum on the USF campus and evolved into a university-wide campaign which was named Formula for Life. To date, the organization has raised over $125,000 for children in need.
