YWCA Northeast Indiana Announces August Diversity Dialogue- Autism Awareness and Women’s Equality Day on August 26, 2015!
(August 25, 2015) – The public is invited to join YWCA Northeast Indiana on Wednesday, August 26th for two exciting events. The day’s activities will begin with our monthly Diversity Dialogue at 12noon. Like everyone else, people with autism move through significant life changes. Their quality of life depends not only on the foundation provided in childhood, but also on ongoing supports that are specific to their educational, medical, social, recreational, family and employment needs.
David Goetz, the Rural Outreach Ally for the Autism Society of Indiana, will lead the discussion on Autism with a special focus on children. Key components of the discussion will include David’s introduction and basic overview of Autism. He will also provide a more detailed discussion of the barriers and difficulties of children who are on the Autism spectrum, with special emphasis on issues (sensory, behavioral, social, and communication) in schools/classrooms. Finally, he will help the group to identify the strengths of those with Autism.
There will also be time for small group conversations. Free parking is available and guests are invited to bring their lunch.
We will end the day with a community celebration focused on Women’s Equality Day. August 26th is designated as Women’s Equality Day. 2015 marks the 95th anniversary of when the 19th Amendment officially became part of the US constitution which granted women the right to vote. This day commemorates a turning point in the history of the struggle for equal treatment of women and women’s rights.
YWCA and our partners AAUW (American Association of University Women), League of Women Voters, and the Women’s Bureau, Inc., will be hosting a screening of the documentary, “Iron Jawed Angels”. Katja von Garnier’s “Iron Jawed Angels” tells the remarkable and little-known story of a group of passionate and dynamic young women, led by Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and her friend Lucy Burns (Frances O’Connor), who put their lives on the line to fight for American women’s right to vote. This true story has startling parallels to today, as the young activists struggle with issues such as the challenges of the perennial balancing act between family life and career.
Networking and refreshments will begin at 5:30pm and the movie showing will begin at 6:00pm. Free parking is available.
