Thomas Dorminy dominates in TinCaps shutout win
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (August 22, 2015) – Behind the pitching of Thomas Dorminy, Yimmi Brasoban, and Colby Blueberg, the TinCaps shut out the South Bend Cubs, 2-0, on Saturday night at Four Winds Field. Fort Wayne has taken the first two games of the series and 20 of its last 23 games overall.
The TinCaps raced out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning against Jake Stinnett (L, 5-6). Center fielder Michael Gettys led off with a triple to center field, and then scored when the game’s second batter, second baseman Luis Urias, hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Fort Wayne (36-18, 68-54) increased its lead in the fifth. Designated hitter Franchy Cordero drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base on a Luis Tejada groundout. First baseman Trae Santos brought Cordero in with a single to left field that made it 2-0. For Santos, it was his team-leading 53rd RBI of the season.
Dorminy (W, 10-7) matched a career high with seven innings of work. The left-hander held the Cubs to three hits, and for the first time in 24 starts this year, he didn’t issue a single walk. Dorminy struck out five.
South Bend (27-27, 56-65) had its best chance to score in the eighth inning, loading the bases against Brasoban with two outs. But the fire-throwing righty struck out Cubs prospect Gleyber Torres to extinguish the threat.
Blueberg (S, 18) followed with a perfect ninth inning.The TinCaps now have 10 shutout wins on the season, with all 10 coming since May 31 — the most in the Midwest League in that time. Fort Wayne leads West Michigan by three games for first place in the Eastern Division with 16 games to go in the regular season. The TinCaps have a nine-game edge on Bowling Green, Lake County, and South Bend, who are all tied for third. The top two teams qualify for the postseason.
Fort Wayne attempts to sweep South Bend on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. Pete Kelich (2-0, 1.80) is set to start for the TinCaps against Zach Hedges (7-7, 3.73). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app.
