TinCaps ReCap: Fort Wayne foiled in pitchers’ duel on road

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (July 7, 2015) – Fort Wayne lost a pitchers’ duel to the South Bend Cubs, 2-1, on an unseasonably cool Tuesday night at Four Winds Field.

With the temperature in the 60s, TinCaps starter Chris Huffman turned in the longest outing of his career, but had little margin for error against Cubs starter Zach Hedges.

Fort Wayne (8-5, 40-41) took a 1-0 lead against Hedges with two outs in the second inning. Third baseman Luis Tejada was hit by a pitch, catcher Michael Miller singled Tejada over to second base, and left fielder Edwin Moreno drove Tejada home with an RBI single.

But after that, despite out-hitting the Cubs, 7-4, the TinCaps didn’t score. Fort Wayne went 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position, left six on base, and in the seventh had Tejada thrown out between third and home.

South Bend (7-6, 36-44) never had a runner in scoring position.

Huffman (L, 3-4) allowed only two men on base through the first six innings. In the seventh, however, Jason Vosler led off with a single. Yasiel Balaguert followed with a two-run home run through the wind to left-center field that made it 2-1.

Although left-hander Taylor Cox eventually relieved Huffman, who went 6 2/3 innings, with 1 1/3 scoreless in relief, it was for naught, as Fort Wayne never managed a rally. Hedges (W, 4-5) threw a career-high eight innings, while Tyler Ihrig (S, 2) pitched a perfect ninth.

The TinCaps and Cubs shift their series to Parkview Field on Wednesday night at 7:05. Righty Ernesto Montas (7-5, 3.33) is set to toe the rubber for Fort Wayne against Erick Leal (6-5, 5.27). The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app, and seen on Comcast Network 81.
