TinCaps close out first half of the season with sweep

(June 21, 2015) – Fort Wayne swept the Bowling Green Hot Rods with a 3-2 win on Sunday at Parkview Field. In his first start in the Padres organization, Brad Wieck (W, 1-0) tossed five innings and picked up the win. Edwin Moreno scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning to break a tie and propel the TinCaps to victory.

It was Fort Wayne’s (32-36) first series sweep of the season and its fourth straight win, a new season-high. Manager Francisco Morales’ team heads into the All-Star break with plenty of momentum, having gone 20-11 over its last 31 games.

The home team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Ruddy Giron and Nick Torres both singled off of Bowling Green (37-33) starter Henry Centeno (L, 4-4). Luis Tejada drove them in with a base hit that bounced through the hole to left field.

Tejada has had a heck of start to his 2015 campaign with the TinCaps. He went 3-3 on Sunday, increasing his batting average to .368 through five games. The native of the Dominican Republic has also knocked in five runs.
The Hot Rods then scored two to knot it up in the top of the third. Riley Unroe’s single to left field drove in Grant Kay and Alec Sole.

Moreno reached first after an error to begin the fifth and later sprinted to third base after another Tejada base knock. Felipe Blanco then grounded into a double play, but it was enough to score Moreno and send Fort Wayne in front, 3-2.

The bullpen did the rest. Yimmi Brasoban, Brandon Fry and Colby Blueberg hurled four scoreless innings, extending the TinCaps’ bullpen shutout streak to 15 consecutive innings (dating back to Thursday’s win against West Michigan). Blueberg notched save number nine on the season, tying him for fourth in the Midwest League.

The TinCaps are off the next three days during the All-Star break, but Torres and Thomas Dorminy will be on display in Peoria, Illinois, on Tuesday at Dozer Park. They will represent Fort Wayne on the Eastern Division All-Star team. Catch the 51st Midwest League Classic on Tuesday on ESPN Radio 1380 at 8:00 p.m.

Fort Wayne begins the second half on the road against Great Lakes on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Listen in on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 6:45 p.m.
