TinCaps bid for four-game sweep falls short
(June 1, 2015) – Fort Wayne’s bid for its first four-game series sweep in five years fell short on Monday as the TinCaps lost to the Whitecaps, 7-2.
West Michigan scored five first inning runs off starter Ernesto Montas (L, 4-4) and never relinquished the lead afterward. The first six batters of the game all registered base hits. The visitors then scored two runs in the second frame to pull in front, 7-0.
The home team recorded its first run off of West Michigan starter A.J. Ladwig (W, 5-4) in the bottom of the fourth. Trae Santos jacked his sixth home run of the year over the tall fence in right field. The first baseman is tied for second in the Midwest League with 22 extra-base hits.
In the fifth, Miguel Del Castillo laced one of his two hits to centerfield to begin the inning. The next batter, Felipe Blanco, plated the catcher after a double to left field. The Whitecaps still led 7-2, and the score would stay the same the rest of the way.
From the second inning on though, TinCaps relievers didn’t surrender a single run. Yimmi Brasoban, Kyle McGrath, Seth Lucio and Bryan Verbitsky combined to shutout the visitors for 7 and 2/3 innings. Fort Wayne’s bullpen hasn’t allowed a run over its last 18 and 2/3 innings.
The TinCaps concluded their nine-game homestand with a 6-3 record. They have an off day on Tuesday for the first time since May 10th. Fort Wayne had played 24 games in just 22 days.
The TinCaps are back in action on Wednesday. They travel to Wisconsin to start their first Western Division road trip. Fort Wayne battles Beloit at 8 p.m. Listen in on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app starting at 7:45 p.m.
