TinCaps sweep doubleheader from Loons

(May 26, 2015) – Felipe Blanco’s walk-off triple gave the TinCaps a 4-3 win and a sweep of a doubleheader against the Great Lakes Loons on Tuesday night at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne won the first game, 4-2.

Blanco’s triple came with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Franchy Cordero, who was pinch-running for Miguel Del Castillo. The catcher led the frame off against David Reid-Foley (L, 0-1) with a single. While Great Lakes (20-24) anticipated Blanco to bunt, he instead swung away and hit the first pitch out to center field.

“I never think about bunting,” Blanco said. “I just tried to put the ball in play and not do too much. It feels great.”

Loons center fielder Alex Verdugo attempted to make a diving catch as he ran forward but missed the ball, which then rolled all the way toward the wall.

The TinCaps now have three walk-off wins on the season, and Blanco has had the game-winning hit in two of them. The 21-year-old second baseman from the Dominican Republic hit a walk-off double against South Bend on April 16.
Fort Wayne (17-27) rallied from behind to win both contests.

In the opener, the Loons took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, but wouldn’t score again against left-hander Thomas Dorminy (W, 4-3). Duanel Jones tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double. Later in the inning, Trae Santos and Edwin Moreno also provided run-scoring hits.

Dorminy went the first six frames as he matched his career high for innings pitched and strikeouts with six. Colby Blueberg (S, 2) then entered to pitch a perfect seventh. Trevor Oaks (L, 3-5) took the loss, despite all of the runs he allowed being unearned.

The second game had a similar script, as Great Lakes took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The TinCaps quickly tied it in the home half with an RBI-double from Michael Gettys and another Santos RBI-single. This time, however, the Loons re-took the lead, 3-2, in the fourth. An inning later, though, Gettys again came through with a run-producing double to level the affair.

On the heels of 3 2/3 innings from starter Yimmi Brasoban, reliever Kyle McGrath (W, 2-0) tossed 3 1/3 scoreless stanzas.

Meanwhile, Tuesday was Military Appreciation Night presented by OmniSource and Steel Dynamics. With 1,282 fans in the crowd from military families with complimentary tickets, the TinCaps wore Captain America-style jerseys, which they’ll wear again on the Fourth of July. The jerseys then will be auctioned off to benefit Honor Flight Northeast Indiana.

Fort Wayne continues its series with Great Lakes on Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m. The TinCaps will start righty Ernesto Montas (3-3, 3.86) against lefty Victor Gonzalez (0-3, 4.44). The game can be seen on Comcast Network 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app.
