Santos homers, TinCaps lose finale in Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (May 17, 2015) – Fort Wayne first baseman Trae Santos hit his fourth home run of the week and fifth of the season, but the TinCaps lost to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 8-3, on Sunday afternoon at Bowling Green Ballpark.

The home team broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the third inning and didn’t stop there. Bowling Green (22-15) piled on a run in the fourth, another in the fifth, and two more each in the sixth and seventh to lead 8-0. Six of those runs — four of them earned — came against TinCaps starter Ernesto Montas (L, 2-3), who pitched six innings.

Fort Wayne (11-23) finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth when third baseman Duanel Jones doubled and Santos plated him with a two-run blast over the fence in right-center field. With five homers, the native of Barrigada, Guam, is second on the club in home runs behind only Jones, who has hit six. Center fielder Edwin Moreno added an RBI-single later in the eighth.

Those TinCaps runs came against reliever Kyle Bird. As for Bowling Green’s starter Brent Honeywell (W, 3-2), he didn’t allow a hit in his seven innings of work. Fort Wayne had only one baserunner against the 20-year-old right-handed Tampa Bay Rays prospect. Left fielder Henry Charles walked to lead off the sixth inning after Honeywell was perfect for five frames.
Fort Wayne continues its 11-game road trip Monday at Lake County. The TinCaps are slated to start right-hander Chris Huffman (0-1, 2.25) against lefty Anderson Polanco (2-3, 2.73) for the Captains. The game can be heard on ESPN Radio 1380, Box Score, and the TuneIn Radio app.
