Dorminy helps TinCaps snap skid
(May 17, 2015) – Behind Thomas Dorminy’s fourth quality start of the season – and team-leading third win — the TinCaps took down the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 6-2, at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Dorminy (W, 3-3) allowed just two hits over the first five frames and finished with five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. He yielded two runs, neither earned. Enderson Franco (L, 3-2) was the losing pitcher for the Hot Rods.
Fort Wayne (11-22) pulled in front 1-0 in the third inning. Miguel Del Castillo led off with a single and Felipe Blanco then walked. Both runners moved up a base after Franco tossed a pickoff throw wide of first base. Michael Gettys then slugged a fly ball deep enough to centerfield to plate Del Castillo.
The visitors added two more in the fourth when Henry Charles drove in a pair of runners to make it a 3-0 ballgame. Charles finished with two hits, and reached base three times.
Later in the sixth inning, both Franchy Cordero and Nick Torres reached base to start the frame against Franco. With Cordero at third and Torres at first, Manager Francisco Morales called for the double steal. Bowling Green catcher Nick Ciuffo fired to second base, but the relay back to the plate was late, and Cordero scored to put the TinCaps up 4-0. Next, Chase Jensen then drove in Torres on a base hit to left field.
Bowling Green (21-15) added runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the score to 5-2, but Fort Wayne answered back in the top of the ninth. Del Castillo scored again on a wild pitch from reliever Brian Miller. The catcher finished 2-4, his third multi-hit game of the year.
Wilson Santos, Seth Lucio and Bryan Verbitsky combined to hurl 3 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The win snaps the TinCaps’ five-game losing streak.
Fort Wayne can win the three-game series on Sunday. Ernesto Montas (2-2, 4.06) makes his seventh start of the season for the TinCaps. He’ll face Hot Rods right-hander Brent Honeywell (2-2, 2.03).
