Rock Legend Leon Russell to Perform with Willie Nelson at Foellinger Theater May 19

(May 1, 2015) – Rock legend LEON RUSSELL will be Willie Nelson’s very special guest during his concert at Foellinger Theatre on Tuesday, May 19 at 7:30 pm.

Born in Lawton, Oklahoma, Leon attended Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, and started performing in nightclubs around Tulsa at age 14. He moved to Los Angeles, and became an in-demand session musician, part of the famous “Wrecking Crew.”

Leon played during recording sessions for Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra. Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Jan & Dean, Glen Campbell, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, Elton John, The Band, BB King and The Rolling Stones.

In 1970, Leon played piano and was the band leader for Joe Cocker’s infamous “Mad Dogs & Englishmen Tour”, and released his debut solo album “Leon Russell” that year as well. That album included Leon’s “Song for You” which has been recorded by over 40 artists since then, including The Carpenters, Ray Charles, The Temptations, Willie Nelson, Amy Winehouse and Christina Aguilera.

In 1979, Leon and Willie Nelson had a #1 song on the country charts with their duet of “Heartbreak Hotel.” In 2010, Elton John and Leon Russell recorded the critically acclaimed “The Union” album before touring together. Leon Russell was inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2011. His singles include “This Masquerade,” “Roll Away The Stone,” “Up On A Tightrope,” “If I Were A Carpenter,” “Back To The Island” and “Queen Of The Roller Derby.”
